What exactly is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is an integrative form of therapy that works via the sense of smell. It focuses on essential oils – highly concentrated essences derived from flowers, plants, roots and seeds. They are considered the ‘heart’ of the plant and possess a wide range of therapeutic properties. Used correctly, they can help with physical, emotional and even chronic ailments – from stress, anxiety and insomnia to migraines or bronchitis.
“The oil can have both a stimulating and a calming effect. That is why it is so important to look closely at the root cause of the discomfort,” explained Bianca Liberati, psychologist and integrative therapist.
How to use essential oils:
Incorporating them into your daily routine is straightforward. Here are some common methods:
Inhalation: Place a few drops in your hands and inhale deeply.
Diffusers: Gently disperse the oil into the air in the room.
Baths & massages: Pure relaxation, especially when combined with a carrier oil.
Nutrition: In small doses and with professional advice internal use is also possible.
Vegetable oil or essential oil – what’s the difference?
Both have their own function. Vegetable oils are oil-based, heavier and serve as a base. Essential oils are, on the other hand, highly volatile and highly concentrated. A mixture of both is ideal for massages or topical applications – it is important not to use them together in a diffuser or for inhalation.
Aromatherapy isn’t just for humans
