Retinoids are a class of drugs that includes the popular anti-ageing ingredient retinol, as well as other, lesser-known retinoids such as tretinoin and adapalene. They work by increasing skin cell turnover, which can improve the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of ageing. However, they can also cause side effects such as dryness, redness and flaking. Retinol palmitate is a derivative of retinol found in many over-the-counter skincare products. In the new study, researchers applied a 0.5 per cent retinol palmitate cream to the faces of 20 women aged between 50 and 70 who showed mild to moderate photoageing. After 12 weeks, the women who had used the cream had significantly fewer wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin than those who had used a placebo cream. They also showed significantly less dryness, redness and flaking. "This study provides compelling evidence that retinol palmitate is a safe and effective alternative to retinoids for the treatment of photoaging", said the study’s lead author, Dr Maryam M. Asgari, associate professor of dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine. “Retinol palmitate should be considered as a first-line treatment for photoaging. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Stanford Center for Innovation in Informed Consent.
