Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide, or more precisely, a so-called glycosaminoglycan. It is produced by the body’s own cells and is found in large quantities almost everywhere in the human body. Particularly in the skin, joint fluid, intervertebral discs and the vitreous humour of the eye. Due to its complex spatial structure, hyaluronic acid has the special property of being able to bind very large amounts of water relative to its mass. For example, it acts as a lubricant, contributing to the friction-free movement and stability of the joints. In the skin, hyaluronic acid ensures the natural elasticity and firmness of the connective tissue.
