Key ingredients:
- Retinyl palmitate is a form of vitamin A that is converted into retinoic acid in the skin and reads the original DNA blueprint. (Concentration: 0.54%, EU-approved maximum is 1%)
- Panthenol is a B-vitamin precursor (provitamin B5) and plays a key role in the skin’s regenerative metabolic processes.
- Passiflora Edulis Seed Oil a plant oil derived from Brazil’s passion fruit. It is also known as maracuja oil, which can improve the appearance and feel of dry skin. Maracuja oil has been shown to have skin-soothing properties. It is also a source of lycopene, an antioxidant commonly found in tomatoes.
- Tocopheryl Acetate a vitamin E acetate, is produced from vegetable oils. It is used as an antioxidant (free radical scavenger).
- Medicago Sativa Extract also known as alfalfa, contains chlorophyll and plays an important role in maintaining skin health. Although alfalfa contains many vitamins and minerals, these help to keep the skin supple and soft overall. It cleanses the skin of impurities and is very beneficial for dry skin.
NOTE: This product is an in-house development by Bel Col Brazil and was newly registered in Europe in 2019. It has been dermatologically tested by the University of São Paulo. It can be used in combination with vitamin A products from other brands without any issues, just not at the same time.
A new clinical study by Stanford University has found that an effective, retinol-like ingredient in a day cream can achieve better results without the irritation often associated with the use of retinoids. The study, published in the journal JAMA Dermatology, found that the ingredient known as retinol palmitate is just as effective as retinoids at improving the appearance of ageing skin, but with far fewer side effects. Retinoids are a class of drugs that includes the popular anti-ageing ingredient retinol, as well as other, lesser-known retinoids such as tretinoin and adapalene. They work by increasing skin cell turnover, which can improve the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of ageing. However, they can also cause side effects such as dryness, redness and flaking. Retinol palmitate is a derivative of retinol found in many over-the-counter skincare products. In the new study, researchers applied a 0.5 per cent retinol palmitate cream to the faces of 20 women aged between 50 and 70 who showed mild to moderate photoageing. After 12 weeks, the women who had used the cream had significantly fewer wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin than those who had used a placebo cream. They also showed significantly less dryness, redness and flaking. "This study provides compelling evidence that retinol palmitate is a safe and effective alternative to retinoids for the treatment of photoaging", said the study’s lead author, Dr Maryam M. Asgari, associate professor of dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine. “Retinol palmitate should be considered as a first-line treatment for photoaging. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Stanford Center for Innovation in Informed Consent.
