Depending on the cause of the scar and the initial treatment, visible scar tissue develops. It can take up to two years for the skin to return to a reasonably normal state. If too much collagen is formed, this causes raised scars or hypertrophic scars, as the collagen attempts to thicken this part of the skin to reduce water loss. If the scar is not treated at all, a keloid scar may form. If you have suffered from acne, many small scars often remain. These can be improved in all cases once the inflamed skin has calmed down.
